Meeting the 2010 biodiversity target ! A contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of life on Earth

8 octobre 2008

With the 2010 biodiversity target, world leaders committed themselves to ‘significantly reduce biodiversity loss by 2010’. The target has also been recognized as an intermediate step to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Yet, biodiversity continues to decline.

Where does biodiversity stand today ? What trends do we witness ? - What are the challenges in achieving the 2010 biodiversity target ? How can we measure success ? - How can Countdown 2010 contribute to addressing these challenges ? Countdown 2010 is a powerful network of active partners working together towards the 2010 biodiversity target. Each partner – governments and local authorities, businesses and civil society – commits additional efforts to tackle the causes of biodiversity loss. Countdown 2010 hubs are currently active in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. The aim of the session is to take stock on where we stand, to stimulate further action towards the 2010 biodiversity target and to set the tone for the UN International Year for Biodiversity.
